The right house and programme

Lamin Kampung is the place named by Brunei Tourism for hands-on heritage activities in Kampong Penapar. The official listing gives Jalan Kecil Sekolah Penapar as its address. The programme also appears as Pangkalan Waris in the tourism authority's 2025 booklet. Use these names together when arranging your visit. Lamin Warisan in Tanjong Maya is a different place; a similar name is not enough to identify the host or confirm an appointment.

Learning through objects

The published programme brings together old photographs, household items, woodcraft and traditional games. These are useful starting points for conversation about how objects were made and used. Let the host choose what to introduce and explain the connection with local life. A gallery visit becomes more meaningful when there is time to ask about a particular object rather than simply photograph every display.

The authority also describes practical activities, including coconut-bowl craft and bamboo work. Agree the activity before arrival so the host can prepare materials and supervision. A demonstration, a short attempt and making a finished object are different levels of participation. Establish which is offered and whether anything you make may be taken home. Do not assume every activity illustrated in a booklet is available during every appointment.

Making a workable visit

No fixed workshop duration or public timetable is established by the reviewed sources. Ask for the length of the agreed session and keep time for the explanation as well as the practical work. If you want a meal, refreshments or a particular language, include that in the arrangement instead of assuming it comes with entry. Families should discuss children's ages and the tools used before selecting a task.

Organise transport to Kampong Penapar and a return pickup. A stay in Bandar Seri Begawan can support a Tutong day, but the road journey is separate from the workshop. Keep other visits flexible enough that a hands-on activity does not end abruptly to meet an unrealistic departure.

Respect and suitability

Handle tools only as shown and wait for permission before touching displayed objects. Ask before portraits or photographs of private spaces. The attraction is a host's interpretation of heritage, not an invitation to explore surrounding homes. Check seating, steps and working height if these affect comfort. This visit suits people who enjoy learning through making, including beginners willing to work patiently. A separate food or farm visit can add another perspective on Tutong, provided each host has a confirmed appointment and enough time to offer their own programme.
