Appearance & recognition
Simpur is a large shrub with broad leaves crossed by prominent parallel side veins. Bright yellow flowers open briefly; ripening fruits split into star-like shapes exposing red-covered seeds. Flowers and fruit can therefore draw attention for very different reasons. The species grows along forest edges, streams and swampy secondary ground.

The broad leaves have food-wrapping uses, while young shoots and leaves are recorded as edible parts. Wrapping and eating are different applications. As a pioneer, the shrub can establish on difficult open soils and provide shelter for other growth. Bees visit the flowers, and the seed display attracts animals, giving this everyday edge plant a role beyond its showy yellow petals.
