Plan your visit

Let the village shape the visit

Setulang’s cultural programme is organised by its local tourism management. The community describes the continuing place of Dayak Kenyah Oma Lung language, customary law and culture in everyday life. A hosted visit gives those who live here the opportunity to introduce that context themselves. Come with curiosity, and let the hosts decide which places and activities are appropriate to share.

This experience has a different focus from walking in Tane Olen forest. The two can complement each other, but a cultural visit should be arranged as a specific programme, with its own hosts and agreed time.

Choose the parts that interest you

The village listing names programmes connected with the lefobong rice barn, Lamin Radu longhouse and Lamin Adat Adjang Lidem. It also lists Kelupi and Cole Beko performances. These are useful subjects to discuss with the organiser, not a promise that every component is available whenever someone arrives.

Ask what each proposed stop means locally and how much explanation is included. If performance is part of your visit, establish who is taking part, when it can happen and whether the arrangement is suitable for your group size. Avoid treating ordinary village life as a performance that should begin on demand.

Make room for conversation

A smaller number of well-explained stops can be more rewarding than trying to include every named programme. Ask about the functions of the buildings you visit and how people use them today. Listen for differences between what a place means to the community and what it looks like to a visitor.

Handicrafts are also part of the village’s tourism description. If makers are available, ask about their work and whether they welcome questions or photographs. Buying something can support a maker directly, but do not assume a shopping stop includes a practical craft lesson.

Agree the practical details

Contact village tourism management before travelling from the Malinau area. Confirm the meeting point, language, duration, contribution and any transport required. Ask about walking distance, steps, seating and toilet access where these affect your group. A cultural visit should not be described as physically effortless without checking the actual programme.

Homestays are listed in Setulang, including Ilung, Nyara, Benenj, Unya and Markus. If staying overnight, agree the exact house, meals and household arrangements separately. An overnight booking does not automatically include a performance or admission to every community space.

Visit as a guest

Follow your hosts’ guidance on entering buildings, clothing and photography. Ask before photographing individuals, and accept that some activities or spaces may be private. Keep any forest excursion or ketinting river outing as a separately confirmed part of your plans.

Leave enough time after the programme to return without rushing your hosts. A clear booking made through the community is more useful than a generic tour listing that happens to mention Malinau or Dayak culture.
