Kalimantan

Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of Borneo, where five provinces invite five different starting decisions. Choose rivers and peat forests around Palangka Raya or Pangkalan Bun, city food and upper-Kapuas journeys in the west, Banjar river life and Meratus hills in the south, Mahakam heritage and Berau islands in the east, or coastal and highland travel in the north. The most useful question is which corridor deserves your time, not how many provinces can fit on a map. Travel usually combines an arrival city with separate road, river or island stages. Use the province summaries below to choose a starting point, then open its destination and activity pages for the actual visit.

West Kalimantan

West Kalimantan rewards a journey connecting Pontianak, Singkawang and Kapuas Hulu. River landscapes, seasonal wetlands and named cultural sites offer different perspectives. Build the itinerary around these relationships, allowing an inland park visit its own time and preparation rather than compressing the province into one quick circuit.

West Kalimantan

Central Kalimantan

Central Kalimantan is best explored through its rivers, forest habitats and distinct local communities. Palangka Raya opens the Kahayan and Sebangau landscapes; Pangkalan Bun and Kumai connect visitors with Tanjung Puting.

Central Kalimantan

South Kalimantan

Explore south-eastern Borneo through Banjar river trade, regional cooking and the Meratus landscape, with Banjarbaru as the provincial capital.

South Kalimantan

East Kalimantan

East Kalimantan connects the Mahakam river cities with Kutai’s lowland forests and the coral seascapes of Berau. Samarinda, Tenggarong and Balikpapan reveal different urban histories; Derawan opens a separate island journey.

North Kalimantan

North Kalimantan connects an island city, a riverside capital and a highland agricultural landscape. Tarakan, Tanjung Selor and Krayan provide different entry points. The strongest journey gives each setting its own purpose, with protected-area visits planned separately from city walks and community encounters.

Choose a corridor, then a base

For a compact first visit, the Pangkalan Bun–Kumai corridor offers a clear sequence from airport to river journey. Pontianak–Singkawang makes a city, food and cultural route. Banjarmasin–Loksado joins river markets with foothill walking, while Balikpapan–Samarinda–Tenggarong gives urban services and Kutai heritage a connected structure. Each is a starting framework; the linked local pages explain its individual stops.

Remote interests require a different pace. Putussibau is relevant to Sungai Utik and upper-Kapuas planning, while Krayan needs a confirmed highland host and transport. A Derawan stay needs both the Berau mainland connection and a sea transfer. These journeys suit travellers willing to plan around local access rather than a chain of interchangeable city hotels.

Time, gateways and overnight choices

Allow roughly a week for one compact corridor as an initial planning choice, with more time for extended forest or community stays. Two weeks can combine city and nature bases within one province. A second province adds a substantial transfer decision, often involving a flight connection or a long road journey. Reserve that travel time before adding another excursion.

Choose Iskandar Airport or Tjilik Riwut Airport for the two Central Kalimantan gateways, Supadio Airport for Pontianak, Syamsudin Noor Airport for the southern cities, Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman airport for Balikpapan and Juwata Airport for Tarakan. Read the matching destination for accommodation options. A town hotel, boat cabin, riverside lodge and village homestay give different access to the day’s activities; compare them through the stay-planning guide.

Choose the province by travel style

For wildlife as the main purpose, begin with a particular protected area rather than a province-wide species list. The two Central Kalimantan corridors differ: Tanjung Puting is approached through Pangkalan Bun and Kumai, while Palangka Raya and Kereng Bangkirai support the Sebangau side. Moving between them is a travel decision, not a short transfer between adjacent park gates. East Kalimantan’s Derawan Island offers a marine emphasis requiring a mainland-and-boat sequence.

For cities, food and living heritage, the west and south offer readable starting routes. Pontianak and Singkawang give different river and Chinese Indonesian urban perspectives. Banjarmasin links Banjar food, sasirangan and floating-market travel; Loksado shifts the journey towards Dayak Meratus communities and guided foothill walking. In the east, Samarinda and Tenggarong contrast a working river city with Kutai museum and ceremonial heritage. Use the linked pages to select specific experiences rather than assuming one cultural label covers all of them.

For remote travel, choose the host and access before the number of stops. Putussibau is relevant to upper-Kapuas planning and Sungai Utik; Setulang belongs to a Malinau-area community journey; Krayan Highlands requires its own highland arrangements. These routes can be deeply rewarding when time is available for travel, conversation and changes in local conditions. They fit poorly into a schedule that depends on changing province every second day. For a shorter trip, keep the city and one main rural or nature stay as the backbone.
