Dayak Meratus communities

The relevant cultural context here is specifically Dayak Meratus. The tourism ministry describes communal balai houses and Aruh Ganal rituals connected with agriculture. A visitor should not assume that every village follows the same arrangements or that ceremonies are scheduled performances. Ask a local guide who may welcome visitors and what permissions are appropriate.

The Amandit and Meratus

Loksado is a district in Hulu Sungai Selatan regency, reached through Kandangan. Its visitor appeal comes from the meeting of the Meratus hills, forested scenery and the Amandit River. Waterfalls such as Haratai add another reason to stay locally. These places are best approached as individual routes with local advice, rather than interchangeable attractions.

A suggested itinerary

  1. 1
    Haratai Waterfall in Loksado district
    Day 1

    Walking and river journeys

Combine guided walking with time beside the Amandit instead of rushing through a long list of sights. Bamboo rafting is documented by the tourism ministry, but availability depends on river conditions and the operator. Discuss difficulty, return transport and lifejackets before committing.

  2. 2

    Day 2

Stay two or three nights in the foothills

For bamboo rafting, discuss water conditions, safety equipment and the return journey with the local operator. Keep that decision separate from a walking booking. The meratus mountains are the wider landscape; the town and nearby communities provide the practical setting for a stay.

Two or three nights let you separate arrival, a guided walk and time on the Amandit. Use Guided walking around Loksado in the Meratus Mountains to choose a route suited to your experience, with Haratai or another agreed local objective rather than a vague promise of “jungle trekking”. A shorter walk with time to understand farms, forest edges and community life can be more rewarding than an overambitious distance.

Ask before entering, photographing or participating, and let agricultural and ceremonial life keep its own rhythm.

Arrange the local stay before the road journey

Reach Loksado through Kandangan from the South Kalimantan road network. If arriving at Syamsudin Noor Airport, consider an initial night in Banjarbaru or Banjarmasin when flight timing makes the overland stage uncomfortable. A visit to the foothills should not depend on arriving tired and immediately beginning a demanding walk. Ketupat Kandangan provides a meaningful food link for the Kandangan part of the route.

There is no separately reviewed Loksado property in the current accommodation collection. Agree a real local room or host, meals, drinking water, guide meeting point and onward transport before leaving the city. Choosing where to stay in Borneo helps with the questions, while Health, safety and remote travel covers preparation for a more isolated stay. Keep a simpler walking alternative for wet conditions. Return to the lowland cities for onward travel, or arrange a different route explicitly with the host instead of assuming through-transport from the village.
