Choose your route and overnight bases

Choose Banjarmasin for a city stay built around the river, Soto Banjar and Sasirangan Cloth. Give a Lok Baintan morning its own early start, then use the rest of the day for a less hurried city visit. Banjarbaru is the airport and provincial-capital base; Syamsudin Noor Airport is there, not in central Banjarmasin.

Add Loksado for a contrasting two-night foothill stay with guided walking and the Amandit landscape. A roughly week-long city-and-hills journey is a sensible starting framework, with transfer days included. Tiwingan Baru & Riam Kanan is a separate reservoir option reached through the Banjarbaru–Aranio corridor; choose it for boats and viewpoints rather than squeezing it into a Loksado transfer. City hotel, airport hotel and locally arranged upland stay solve different needs.

Overview

South Kalimantan rewards an itinerary that connects river settlements with upland landscapes. Banjarbaru is the provincial capital under the 2022 law, while Banjarmasin remains a useful river-city base. Keep both places distinct when arranging airport transfers, accommodation and onward travel.

Geography

The province occupies south-eastern Indonesian Borneo. Its river connections and Meratus mountain landscape offer different travel settings, so a city visit and a hill journey should have separate time allowances. Administrative names matter: Banjar regency, Banjarbaru city and Banjarmasin city are different places.

Landscape

Around Banjarmasin and Lok Baintan, rivers form working routes through inhabited landscapes. Around Loksado, the Amandit River meets Meratus foothills and waterfall routes. These are complementary settings; neither should be reduced to a generic jungle backdrop or visited without attention to local use.

Nature & wildlife

Pulau Kaget is officially documented as proboscis-monkey habitat. That precise relationship supports interest in conservation without promising a sighting or adding unverified species. Ask the conservation authority about permitted access and view any wildlife quietly, without feeding or approaching it for photographs.

Important nature areas

Meratus became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2025; the designation concerns earth heritage and local development, not national-park status. Pulau Kaget is described by KSDAE as a wildlife sanctuary. Treat these as different management contexts and verify access for the particular site.

Culture

Banjar language, river trading and sasirangan craft offer distinct introductions to provincial culture. Loksado's balai houses and agricultural traditions belong specifically to Dayak Meratus communities. Name communities and practitioners accurately and ask before entering homes, attending ceremonies or making close photographs.

Food

Soto Banjar combines chicken broth with rice cake and accompaniments. Ketupat Kandangan pairs rice cake with haruan fish and coconut broth, giving Kandangan a concrete food connection. Ask cooks about ingredients and preparation; regional names do not guarantee identical recipes or suitability for dietary restrictions.

Cities & destinations

Choose Banjarmasin for river-city exploration, Banjarbaru for capital and airport context, and Loksado for a locally guided upland visit. Lok Baintan lies in Sungai Tabuk, Banjar regency, outside Banjarmasin. A coherent route gives each place time instead of treating all names as nearby city sights.

Things to do

Combine a river-market journey with Banjar food and a sasirangan maker visit, then add guided walking around Loksado if time allows. Agree on the route and current access before booking. River outings and waterfall walks depend on conditions and should include a practical alternative.

Getting there

Syamsudin Noor Airport is in Landasan Ulin, Banjarbaru. Check current routes with the airline and arrange the onward transfer to the actual hotel address. A booking labelled Banjarmasin does not necessarily place an airport or accommodation within Banjarmasin city; precise locations prevent avoidable travel confusion.

Getting around

Road travel connects city bases with Kandangan and Loksado, while a boat is part of a river-market visit. Agree on pickup, return, total charge and safety equipment. Give upland travel separate time and ask local providers about current road, river and weather conditions.

Climate

Use BMKG's South Kalimantan forecasts for seasonal and daily planning. Its 2026 update distinguishes dry-season onset by zone, illustrating that rain patterns vary across the province and between years. A drier period can still have disruptive rain; mountain paths and river levels need current information.

When to visit

There is no single verified best month for every part of South Kalimantan. Choose dates according to the intended activity, then review the latest BMKG outlook and local advice. Early-market visits depend on daily trading activity; walking and river outings depend on actual weather and water conditions.

Practical information

Carry the exact accommodation address and provider contacts, agree on charges before travel and keep cash for small purchases. Ask before photographing people or entering community spaces. Conservation access needs its own confirmation, and a UNESCO label does not replace permission or a local guide's judgment.

Places to stay

Match the overnight base to the itinerary: Banjarmasin for river-city days, Banjarbaru for airport arrangements and Loksado for upland time. Novotel Banjarmasin Airport is officially verified in Landasan Ulin, Banjarbaru. Check current availability, room terms and transfer charges through the hotel rather than assuming included services.
