Technique and makers
Sasirangan is a South Kalimantan textile tradition associated with Banjar communities. The national heritage record describes work with basting stitches and binding, which helps create the characteristic patterned cloth. Looking closely at how a piece is made provides a better introduction than treating every colourful fabric sold nearby as identical. Ask a maker to distinguish stitching, dyeing and finishing.

The official register records Sasirangan in 2013 under traditional skills and crafts, with Banjar regency as the listed locality. It also notes use in Banjar customary events. This is a documented cultural association rather than a licence to invent one fixed meaning for every pattern. Makers may offer their own explanations and contemporary designs; identify those explanations as theirs.

A shop or workshop visit can link a purchase with the person who made it. Ask whether the cloth is locally produced, how it should be washed and whether demonstrations are available that day. Agree on any workshop fee in advance. Photograph hands, tools or finished cloth only with permission, and credit the maker when sharing a description of the visit.
