What you come to see
Produce, prepared foods and household goods move between boats rather than fixed market stalls. The local tourism authority describes women traders, many wearing broad tanggui hats, and both retail and wholesale exchange. Goods and activity vary, so photographs are a record of one morning, not a promise of an identical scene. Look at how boats approach and trade without blocking their movement. Ask before close portraits, buy directly if something appeals to you, and avoid requesting staged transactions merely for a photograph.
Arrange the morning boat
The Banjar tourism department’s 2023 description places trading in the early morning, approximately 06:00–09:30 WITA. Treat this as an indication of the trading period, not a guaranteed current timetable. Agree the actual departure the previous day with an operator who knows the river. Allow a morning including the outward journey, market and return; travel time depends on the landing used. Confirm the full boat price, passenger number, pickup point, return and lifejackets. A visit is not the same as a fixed-price admission ticket to a fenced attraction.
Location, comfort and combinations
The market is in Sungai Tabuk district, Banjar regency, outside Banjarmasin, which is a common starting base. Specify Lok Baintan when booking: different floating markets and departures are not interchangeable. Boarding a small boat can require balance and a step across a moving gap; discuss mobility needs beforehand. Keep electronics dry, carry small cash and supervise children closely. River-market journeys explains the wider experience, while Banjar rivers and food gives cultural context. Leave a relaxed meal or city walk for afterwards rather than adding a distant excursion to an already early start.
