How the plant grows

Sega rattan is a clustering climbing palm. Slender canes climb using hooked structures associated with the leaves, rather than a tree-like trunk becoming wider each year. The undersides of the leaflets are often conspicuously pale. PROSEA records rotan taman in southern and central Kalimantan, alongside the wider trade name rotan sega.

Materials & other uses

The cane supplies basketry, mats, cordage and furniture materials. Smallholder cultivation has a long history along Central Kalimantan’s Mentaya River, where supporting trees are part of the growing system. Processing and cane quality affect its eventual use. Rotan irit is another cultivated rattan, not a synonym. A generic reference to edible rattan shoots does not establish that this particular species is an ingredient in a named dish.
