How the plant grows
Rotan irit is a climbing palm that spreads through long stolons and produces multiple canes. Its native range centres on the Barito–Kapuas floodplains of southern and central Kalimantan. Planting has extended its occurrence elsewhere, including Sabah. Native range and cultivation are therefore different geographic facts, even when both describe a living stand of the same rattan.

Flexible cane peels are valued for woven chair seats and backs; cores and whole canes have other furniture and basketry uses. Regional mat production also uses the material. Its pliability differs from sega rattan, explaining why similar-looking canes serve different workshop purposes. Long-established riverbank cultivation connects this species with local livelihoods, not only forest collection.
