Where you walk
Loksado is the practical visitor base in the Meratus Mountains of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The national tourism authority describes its setting among rivers, villages and forest, including the Haratai waterfall area. Choose a specific local route with your guide rather than booking an undefined trek across the whole mountain range.
A walk towards a waterfall, a village path and a longer forest route have different distances, surfaces and access arrangements. Ask where the route starts, whether it returns to the same point and which sections involve steep or wet ground. Those details are more useful than a general label such as easy or adventurous.
What a walking day can look like
Meet your guide in Loksado, discuss the current weather and agree the route. A shorter outing can follow established paths with pauses to look at the river, vegetation and village surroundings. Longer walking adds more sustained time on slopes or forest ground and needs an agreed turnaround point, food and sufficient water.
The guide's value includes knowing which paths are currently usable and how to approach places used by local residents. Visits to community buildings or households should be arranged with the people concerned. Everyday life is not a scheduled cultural performance, and a walking route should not imply that a ceremony or private home will be available to visitors.
Where Haratai or another waterfall is included, let current access and river conditions determine the route. Seeing a waterfall and swimming beneath it are separate decisions; the latter should never be assumed from the name of an outing. River activities such as bamboo rafting also require their own arrangement and are not automatically part of a walking day.
Getting there and allowing enough time
The established road approach runs from Banjarmasin through Kandangan towards Loksado, with the final approach becoming more local and winding. Visitors arriving through Syamsudin Noor Airport should plan the onward road journey as a substantial transfer rather than a short airport connection. Confirm your actual driver, pickup and arrival time with the host.
A half-day is useful for a short local walk once you are already in Loksado; a full day allows more time on a chosen route. Two nights in the area can make the itinerary more comfortable, giving you an arrival evening and a complete walking day before departure. These are planning suggestions, not a published tour schedule. Weather and the selected path determine what fits responsibly into the day.
Staying locally and arranging a guide
Use a local guesthouse, lodge or host-arranged stay in the Loksado area if walking is the main purpose. Ask about meals, drinking water, bathroom facilities and transport to the trail start. A Banjarmasin hotel is suitable before or after the inland trip, but it is not the same as staying close to the walking routes.
A local guide is strongly recommended for forest routes and community visits. Arrange one in advance, explain your walking experience and agree whether food, local transfers and any entrance charges are included. This recommendation should not be confused with a verified legal requirement covering every public path in Meratus. If a particular route needs permission, ask the organiser to identify the place and obtain the relevant agreement.
Effort, timing and combinations
Expect tropical humidity, roots, slopes and potentially slippery or muddy surfaces. A modest distance can take longer than the same distance on a pavement. Wear footwear suited to wet ground, protect valuables from rain and choose a shorter route when that better matches your group. Families can benefit from a flexible local walk; travellers wanting sustained trekking should agree the actual terrain and daily distance beforehand.
Start with the day's local weather and river conditions rather than a generic Borneo dry-season rule. Pair the trip with time in Loksado itself, or with ketupat Kandangan during the journey through the Kandangan area. Lok Baintan's morning river market provides a contrasting lowland experience on another day based in Banjarmasin. Keeping the market and highland walking on separate days gives both experiences room to work.
