Visit a fishing bagang with Sarang Tiung’s hosts

Join Sarang Tiung’s fishing community for a locally arranged sea outing to a bagang, a fishing platform off Pulau Laut. The experience centres on meeting the fishers and understanding their work, with the boat journey, net activity and return agreed around conditions at sea.

Travel out with the community

The village’s sea programme starts from Kampung Nelayan in Sarang Tiung, in the Kotabaru area. Its advertised afternoon approach takes around 45 minutes by boat, although the actual journey depends on the departure point, chosen platform and sea conditions. Arrange the precise meeting place with the hosts rather than arriving at an unspecified harbour.

Once aboard, the perspective changes from the village waterfront to the coast and hills behind it. A late-afternoon visit may include time to watch the changing light. Treat sunset as part of the setting, not something the host can guarantee in every season or weather pattern.

Watch the net work

The bagang is a workplace. Ask the fishers to explain how the equipment is used and where guests should stand. The community programme includes opportunities to see or join net hauling, but participation should follow the crew’s instructions and the work happening that day.

Keep hands, straps and loose belongings away from moving equipment. Let the crew decide when visitors can help and when they should simply observe. Do not ask fishers to interrupt an operation for photographs. Ask permission before photographing people, and listen to their account of the catch rather than expecting a particular species or quantity.

Discuss food and time on the platform

Cooking and eating fish are part of the described programme. Ask what meal is planned, how dietary needs can be handled and what happens if the catch is small. Bring drinking water as agreed with the hosts and avoid assuming that a working platform offers the facilities of a restaurant.

The community also describes overnight visits, but these need a separate conversation about sleeping space, toilets, lighting and the return journey. A daytime or evening outing can be a complete experience. Choose the arrangement that matches your comfort and interest rather than adding a night simply because it appears in a wider village package.

Confirm the boat arrangements

Before paying, confirm suitable lifejackets for everyone, the boat operator, the platform transfer and the plan for returning ashore. Discuss mobility limitations and children’s needs explicitly. Ask how a weather cancellation or early return is handled, and keep the following journey flexible.

Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the crew’s advice and protect belongings from spray. Stay within the area assigned to guests and bring all rubbish back. This visit works best with a small, attentive group willing to follow the fishers’ rhythm, allowing conversation and observation to matter as much as taking part.
