Earth history
Meratus became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2025. Its recognition invites visitors to look beyond a green skyline and consider the geological history beneath it. UNESCO describes a complex tectonic record beginning in the Jurassic. That is a reason to seek interpretation at named geosites, not to assume every hillside tells an identical story. A geopark also connects education and local development with earth heritage. The designation does not turn the entire landscape into a national park or establish one universal visitor rule.

Loksado provides a practical place to begin. It is a district of Hulu Sungai Selatan, reached through Kandangan, where the Amandit River and waterfall routes meet foothill scenery. This is one area within a wider mountain landscape, not a shortcut to everything called Meratus. Staying long enough to discuss a route with a guide creates room for more than a quick photograph. Ask what the day's water levels and weather mean for the intended walk and whether another route would offer a better experience.

A named community
The cultural context around Loksado is specifically Dayak Meratus. The tourism ministry describes balai communal houses and agricultural Aruh Ganal rituals, while research on local kurung-kurung music links it with community identity and social and spiritual expression. These references help identify a place, but they do not make every home open to visitors. Let a guide introduce the relevant hosts and explain what may be discussed, photographed or entered. A ceremony has its own community purpose and should not be treated as a performance available on demand.
An attentive visit
A good walk can hold landscape and community context together without promising extraordinary encounters. Agree on the route, duration, difficulty and return transport before leaving, and respect any access change suggested by the guide. Carry water and rain protection and keep a shorter option available. South Kalimantan's seasonal forecasts vary by zone and year, so a calendar alone cannot settle the day's decision. Remember the names of the river, settlement and people who helped you understand them; those details make the landscape more specific than a generic jungle description.
