Arranging your boat transfer to Maratua

Coordinate your Maratua accommodation with the mainland arrival, boat journey and any overnight in Tanjung Redeb or Tarakan before booking flights.

Begin with the accommodation

A Maratua journey works best when the island host confirms the transfer before you commit to mainland flights. Different properties can use different boats, jetties and departure arrangements. Maratua Dive Resort provides one clearly described example, coordinating the mainland handover and arrival at its own private jetty. Use those details to frame questions for your chosen accommodation, rather than assuming every resort follows the same plan.

Ask who books each stage, whether transfers are included in your stay, and what happens if your arrival is delayed. Give the host your flight details and the names of everyone travelling. Keep a contact for the mainland coordinator as well as for the island property.

The Berau approach

Maratua Dive Resort describes meeting guests at Kalimarau Airport, a road transfer of about twenty minutes to a tourist pier and a boat journey of roughly three hours. Its outline divides the boat leg between river travel and open sea. These are planning estimates for its own operation, not a guaranteed duration for every Maratua transfer.

The resort advises arriving in Tanjung Redeb by 14:30 for its same-day connection. Later arrivals are directed to an overnight in town and a boat the following morning. Confirm how that overnight is arranged and paid for before accepting a flight, especially if a change would affect your first island night.

Tarakan and the return journey

The operator also describes a Tarakan approach with a city overnight followed by an early boat of approximately three hours the next morning. Confirm the actual departure jetty and hotel collection point. If reaching Tarakan through an international crossing, establish that crossing and its entry requirements separately before treating it as part of a continuous itinerary.

For return travel through Berau, the resort advises an onward flight at 11:00 or later; an earlier flight requires leaving the island the previous day and sleeping on the mainland. Its Tarakan return similarly includes an overnight before onward travel. Ask your own host for a suitable flight window, as another property may organise boats differently.

Prepare for the water journey

All transfers depend on sea and weather conditions. Agree the postponement procedure, contact method and responsibility for an extra mainland night if plans change. Avoid using the earliest theoretical arrival as the basis for an essential onward connection.

Discuss baggage and diving equipment, keep documents and essential items protected from water, and ask about suitable life jackets and help boarding. Share mobility needs before departure so the host can explain the actual pier and boat arrangement. With those details settled, the transfer becomes a planned stage of the stay, giving you time to arrive and leave without squeezing the island between uncertain connections.
