Match the gateway to the journey
Begin with the region you want to visit. Kota Kinabalu airport serves western Sabah; Kuching airport is a logical starting point for southern Sarawak; Brunei International Airport serves Bandar Seri Begawan. For Kalimantan, compare the provincial gateway with your actual destination: Iskandar for Pangkalan Bun and Kumai, Tjilik Riwut for Palangka Raya, Sepinggan for Balikpapan and onward East Kalimantan.
An international designation describes an airport, not the availability of a direct flight from your country. Look for a bookable itinerary on your dates. A connection through a major hub may be more practical than a geographically nearer airport with inconvenient onward transport. Keep entry procedures and terminal transfers in the calculation.
Flights and remote airstrips
Domestic flights can save a long overland leg, but airport access, check-in and luggage collection still occupy part of the day. Separate tickets usually require you to manage the connection yourself. For a weather-sensitive flight or a final international departure, an overnight buffer is a useful planning choice.
Miri is an important gateway for northern Sarawak and connections towards Mulu and the interior. Small-aircraft journeys require particular attention to baggage allowance, operating days and the return seat. Arrange the host and both flight legs together. Do not construct a remote itinerary around an assumed daily service. Carrier names and timetables can change; use the operating airline rather than an old travel blog for the final booking.
Road: bus, driver or rental car
A bus is useful when its published stops match your route and you can reach the terminal. A car with driver makes stops and the last stretch to a lodge easier to agree. Self-drive gives flexibility but adds licence, insurance, road-condition and parking decisions. A rental agreement may restrict border crossings or unsealed roads. Settle those conditions before collecting the vehicle.
Ask for a door-to-door estimate with daylight, meal stops and current roadworks included. Regional journeys deserve transfer days, not a leftover hour between activities. An airport hotel and a city-centre hotel solve different problems: compare the next morning’s departure point before choosing either.
Boats: transfer or experience?
A ferry or local passenger boat connects places; a guided river excursion is an activity. A klotok stay in the Tanjung Puting area combines transport, accommodation and a guided programme, so establish what the booking actually includes. For a longboat or island transfer, agree the jetty, destination, baggage handling, life jackets and return arrangement. Sea conditions and river levels can change the usable route.
The river activity guide explains experiences, while Central Kalimantan transport explains access. For islands reached through Tawau and Semporna, match the flight arrival with the operator’s boat departure and allow a mainland night when they do not fit. For Temburong, road access to the district does not remove the separate river arrangements for a forest visit. Remote transfers work best when one host coordinates the complete chain.
