Build a document checklist for your passport
This guide helps you organise a tourist journey through Indonesian Borneo, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. Entry eligibility depends on nationality, passport type, travel purpose, previous travel and intended stay. Begin with the immigration authority for each country on your route. A rule written for British passport holders, such as the FCDO entry pages listed below, cannot establish eligibility for every reader.
Record passport validity, blank-page requirements, visa or exemption, arrival declaration, onward ticket and first accommodation address separately. Match names and passport numbers across bookings. Save approvals offline and carry the original passport. If travelling on an emergency document, with multiple nationalities or for work, obtain guidance specific to that situation before committing to non-refundable travel.
Indonesia: visa and All Indonesia
Kalimantan follows Indonesian entry rules. Determine your eligible visa category or exemption through Immigration; visa-on-arrival eligibility is not universal. Check whether your actual entry airport or land checkpoint handles the permission you intend to use. An airport name containing “international” does not answer that question.
All Indonesia is the integrated arrival declaration for international arrivals, covering immigration, customs, health and quarantine information. It is separate from visa permission. Use the official government service and retain the confirmation. If you enter Indonesia through Jakarta before flying to Pangkalan Bun or Palangka Raya, that first international entry is the relevant arrival step; the onward flight is domestic. Allow time there for immigration, bags, customs and any terminal transfer.
Malaysia: MDAC and state controls
Use Malaysian Immigration to establish visa requirements and whether you must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. The MDAC portal sets the submission window and exemptions; the card does not grant a visa or replace an immigration decision. Make the declaration against your actual arrival, not a draft route you later changed.
Carry your passport when travelling to Sabah or Sarawak, including from Peninsular Malaysia. Their immigration controls also matter on domestic journeys. Keep the entry permission and observe the authorised stay. A flight between Malaysian regions is different from entering another country, while an overland route via Brunei adds international entries and exits. Build that distinction into your transfer plan rather than treating every Malaysian leg as an unrestricted local journey.
Brunei and overland combinations
Brunei has its own nationality-based visa rules and E-Arrival Card process. Use its Immigration Department rather than assuming Malaysian permission also covers Brunei. A return journey into Malaysia is another entry, so consider remaining passport validity and the permission needed for re-entry.
For a Miri–Bandar Seri Begawan combination, agree a vehicle and driver authorised for the whole journey, document requirements, border opening arrangements and pickup on either side before booking. Vehicle permits and insurance are separate from passenger entry. Keep a border-transfer day free of tightly timed excursions. Longer overland journeys can pass through more than one jurisdiction; list each crossing in order. For a first trip with little spare time, compare a flight-based combination before choosing a multi-border road journey.
