Two waterways in one organised journey

This journey combines the Rungan area near Sei Gohong with an overnight cruise on the Kahayan. The connection is made partly by road: a canoe outing near Kaja Island comes before the transfer to the main boat. Understanding that sequence helps you choose the trip for its varied river and village experiences rather than imagining one uninterrupted voyage between the two waterways.

WOW Borneo publishes three-day, two-night and four-day, three-night versions of its Kahayan programme. Both combine a cabin aboard with smaller-boat excursions and hosted visits ashore. The extra day changes the later village programme and return journey. Choose between them according to the pace and nights you want, then have the operator confirm the actual sequence for your departure.

Beginning around Sei Gohong

The published route starts with a Palangka Raya pickup and a road transfer to Sei Gohong for the Kaja outing. Orangutans on this island are in a pre-release setting connected with rehabilitation. Observation takes place from the boat under local guidance. Remain off the island, keep food away and follow instructions about distance; this is a chance to observe, not to touch or feed animals.

After returning towards Palangka Raya, the programme continues by road to the Kahayan area around Bukit Rawi and Sigi before boarding. Village introductions can include a welcome and an explanation of painted sandung, the Dayak ossuaries. Let the hosts explain their meaning and the appropriate way to behave around them. A cultural stop is more rewarding when its significance is understood before photographs are taken.

Life along the Kahayan

The cruise programme pairs a small-boat excursion on Lake Bagantung with visits showing everyday skills and livelihoods. At Tumbang Nusa, the emphasis includes weaving with purun sedge and local food production. Around Pilang, the programme describes a welcome, music and rattan work. The interest lies in seeing how water, materials and community life connect, with time to ask hosts about their work.

These are hosted encounters, so the people and activities available may vary. A named craft is an invitation to learn rather than a guarantee that every production stage will happen during your visit. If you want to buy something, ask who made it and allow time to choose without making purchases the purpose of the whole stop. Respect private spaces and seek permission before close photographs.

Watching wildlife with the right expectations

The published route also passes the orangutan islands of Selat and Badak. Treat each observation opportunity according to the guide’s instructions and the animals’ behaviour. Rehabilitation islands and free-ranging forest wildlife are different settings; neither offers a reason to demand a close encounter. A long lens or binoculars can help you watch while giving animals space.

The blackwater excursion brings another scale of attention: waterways, vegetation and the surroundings of fishing activity. Take the guide’s lead on what can be seen that morning. Leaving time to listen and look is often more satisfying than measuring the day by a list of species. Keep noise low and avoid asking the boat crew to interrupt another person’s work for a photograph.

Cabins, meals and time aboard

WOW Borneo describes Rahai’i Pangun as a Kahayan boat with four air-conditioned cabins. The cruise offer uses private cabins with ensuite facilities, while meals and excursions are organised as part of the journey. Confirm the named vessel and cabin before booking, especially if photographs show more than one boat. Private sleeping space does not remove the need to negotiate steps and small-boat transfers.

The operator’s practical information warns that phone coverage can be unreliable outside town. Download what you need beforehand and let contacts know you may be offline. Discuss diet, drinking water and any mobility requirements before departure. Pack a small bag for canoe outings and protect cameras from spray or rain. Clothing that works for village visits as well as the deck makes changing between activities easier.

Choosing the ending and making arrangements

In the shorter programme, the visit around Pilang is followed by lunch and a road transfer back towards the airport or hotel. The longer itinerary continues with further river time, Tanjung Pusaka and Bereng Bengkel before returning to Palangka Raya. Those endings have different implications for flights: ask for the confirmed drop-off and a suitable connection instead of applying one finish time to both options.

A useful quotation identifies the cabin, nights aboard, meals, guide, shore visits, conservation contributions and first- and last-day transfers. Clarify any hotel stay outside the cruise and the operator’s insurance requirements. Families and solo travellers should obtain terms for their exact party. Confirm that the departure is running before fixing non-refundable connections, and allow the crew and hosts to adapt individual stops when river conditions or local circumstances change.
