The experience
The Brunei River and its tributaries bring mangrove habitat close to Bandar Seri Begawan. A wildlife boat trip looks for proboscis monkeys, birds and other river animals. Some routes also pass Kampong Ayer, but a view from the boat is not the same as a hosted visit inside the water village.
Time and effort
Documented products vary from around two to three hours. Evening routes may add firefly observation, while morning variants have a different light and schedule. These are options within one river experience; check the actual start, water time and inclusions instead of assuming every departure includes every highlight.
Getting there and staying nearby
Stay in Bandar Seri Begawan and confirm the exact jetty or hotel pickup. Some reviewed products exclude the cruise-ship terminal at Muara, so visitors arriving by ship must not assume a city pickup covers them. Arrange the return connection and any village stop explicitly.
Guides, access and conditions
Wildlife movement and weather determine what can be seen. Fireflies are particularly unsuitable as a fixed promise simply because the itinerary extends after dusk. Verify the future date and boat arrangements directly; a product page or review confirms the type of outing, not a guaranteed departure.
Preparation and respectful visiting
Wear the provided life jacket and follow the boat crew’s instructions. Request observation from a respectful distance without feeding, chasing or attracting animals. Keep voices low near wildlife and residential riverbanks, and ask before photographing people in waterside homes.
Combining and arranging your visit
A separate Bandar heritage walk gives context on land. Keep the existing hosted Kampong Ayer experience distinct if you want time with residents rather than only a passing view. Compare river products by route, group size, guiding and transfers, not by the longest list of promised animals.
