The experience
The village lists Halo Tabung among its visitor attractions. A provincial visit in January 2026 describes a karst depression with a pool influenced by seawater and tides. Viewing the formation is the focus here; this page does not recommend cave diving, jumping or swimming.
Gateway and accommodation
Stay on Maratua and ask your accommodation or the village tourism group how to reach Payung-Payung. Confirm transport both ways. Resorts occupy different parts of the island, so a local outing may still require a prearranged vehicle rather than a walk from your room.
Time and effort
No reliable standard duration is published. As editorial planning, leave a flexible part of a day and let the host define the route. Ask about uneven limestone, steps and the actual viewing position before deciding whether it suits your mobility.
Arranging the visit
Agree the places visited, guide, transport and any entry charges with the host. Cultural performances listed by the village are not guaranteed daily events. A meaningful visit can simply involve conversation, landscape and everyday surroundings without requesting a staged ceremony.
Conditions and preparation
Wear shoes with grip and follow local instructions near edges and water. Tide affects the pool; a photograph does not establish safe access. Ask before photographing people or entering private spaces, and avoid taking rock, shells or other natural material.
Combining your trip
This land visit complements a diving or snorkelling stay without requiring another sea crossing. Keep spare time for changed transfer conditions. Treat Kakaban lake access as a separate question; its inclusion in older regional lists is not proof that visits are currently permitted.
