Setulang Tane Olen community forest walk

Tane Olen is a forest governed through Dayak Kenyah customary rules. A visit from Setulang brings the forest and its community management together: the point is to understand a living protected resource, rather than enter an apparently empty wilderness.

Plan your visit

The experience

The local tourism authority describes light trekking coordinated by Setulang's village tourism managers. Let a local guide choose the route and explain how the forest supports water, plants, animals and community needs. A short guided walk is a different commitment from a camping expedition.

Gateway and accommodation

Setulang is the local starting point. Malinau town provides an alternative accommodation base; the tourism authority gives about 35 kilometres and one hour by road as an indication. Confirm pickup and return arrangements rather than treating that estimate as a guaranteed transfer time.

Time and effort

No fixed walking duration is established for this outing. Ask for the actual route length, gradients, stream crossings and return time before agreeing a programme. Allow road travel as well as the forest visit in your day. The description of light trekking does not establish accessibility for every visitor.

Arranging the visit

Arrange the visit with the village's Pokdarwis or tourism managers. Malinau's tourism department also offers help coordinating local accommodation, transport and village contacts. Ask which permissions, guide services and meals are included. Camping requires a separate agreement; it is not an automatic extension of a daytime visit.

Conditions and preparation

Wear shoes suitable for wet forest ground and carry water, rain protection and a small bag for your litter. Follow the host's rules and do not collect plants or other forest products. Ask before photographing people or culturally sensitive places. Rain can change the suitable route.

Combining your trip

Give the visit time for conversation in Setulang rather than adding an unarranged cultural performance. This is a Malinau-area experience, not a substitute for the more distant Krayan highlands. An overnight stay should be confirmed directly with the host before travel.
