A house with a story
The museum presents the home associated with writer Agnes Keith and her family in Sandakan. Rooms and interpretation offer a closer scale than a general city timeline: how people lived, wrote and remembered the place. Treat the displayed history as the starting point, rather than imagining that every surviving object is unchanged from one moment in the past.
Read beyond the view
Allow time for the interpretation, not only exterior photographs. Keith’s viewpoint is one historical perspective within a much wider local history. Pair it with the heritage trail and other accounts of Sandakan rather than treating one household’s story as the whole city’s experience.
Planning a visit
Check current opening arrangements with Sabah Museum before setting out. The hill setting involves a climb from the older centre; a short vehicle transfer can be more practical in heat or rain. Follow indoor photography instructions and leave enough time to return to town without rushing.
