Alun-alun Nunukan

Nunukan’s central square is a point of orientation and a place to read the town’s changing public life. Treat it as an urban pause rather than a guaranteed market or event.

A public space in transition

In 2026, local authorities began relocating traders from the square towards the Tanah Merah area, with the square intended to regain its green-public-space function. Older photographs of busy food stalls therefore do not prove that the same stalls remain. Look at the current layout and respect any work areas.

Keep the visit simple

A short walk can fit between town errands, a meal and a hotel return. Avoid the hottest part of the day, carry water and allow residents their normal use of the space. There is no promised performance or festival in this guide; check any event announcement for its actual date and location.

Food requires a separate choice

For a specifically documented food outing, Mamolo has a Sunday-morning market elsewhere on the island. Do not confuse it with the square or with relocated town vendors. Ask your accommodation for current local eating options and arrange transport if going beyond the centre.
