Kemala belongs to Balikpapan’s urban shoreline. The airport’s destination guide identifies it as a beach close to the centre with places to eat beside the sea. That makes it useful for a modest coastal pause rather than a separate expedition. Give yourself time to look along the shore and notice the relationship between the beach and the surrounding city. Do not expect the isolation of an offshore island or an undeveloped coastline.
A considered visit
Combine Kemala with one other central-city stop and leave room for a meal. Check conditions before entering the water; a beach listing does not establish that swimming is safe at a particular moment. Respect any on-site restrictions, keep clear of working or private areas and take your litter away. Ask before photographing visitors at close range.
