A market with regional connections
Kebun Sayur is a craft and souvenir shopping area in Balikpapan. The airport’s guide describes beadwork, East Kalimantan-patterned textiles and jewellery among the goods sold here. The interesting question is not only what an object costs, but what it is made from and where it comes from. A Balikpapan stall can sell goods from elsewhere; the market is not evidence that every item was made locally.
A considered visit
Take time to compare workmanship without feeling obliged to buy. Ask permission before photographing a seller or a display and handle textiles or ornaments only after an invitation. Avoid treating the varied traditions represented here as one interchangeable style. If provenance matters to a purchase, ask for evidence rather than relying on a souvenir label. Do not buy wildlife products or objects whose legality or materials you cannot establish.
Before you go
Use the craft-market destination when arranging a ride; a similarly named plaza is not automatically the same place. Check which stalls are open on the day and agree a return pickup. No current stall count, fixed opening hours or guaranteed product range is promised here.
