Puu Jih Shih Temple

Puu Jih Shih Temple combines a working Buddhist place of worship with a hillside setting above Sandakan. Visit for the architecture and coastal outlook while respecting its religious purpose.

Architecture above the bay

The temple is included in Sabah Tourism’s Sandakan visitor information. Its elevated position gives a different understanding of the city’s relationship with the bay than the waterfront streets do. Spend time with the decorative details and the outlook rather than rushing through for a single photograph.

A place of worship first

Wear considerate clothing, lower your voice and follow any instructions about shoes and photography. Worshippers take priority. Do not enter areas closed to visitors or rearrange religious objects for a picture; ask a caretaker if you are unsure where you may stand.

Getting there

Arrange a vehicle from your Sandakan base and agree on the return journey. A hilltop address is not the same as a level city-centre stroll. Check visiting access before departure and keep the programme flexible if rain limits the view.
