Local communities
The official Heritage River Trail describes a settlement sustained by generations of families, with schools, shops and public services supporting contemporary life on the water. This is a residential community with daily routines, rather than an architectural display alone. Its heritage perspective includes how households adapt river living and maintain connections across the settlement.

Established in 2009, the Cultural and Tourism Gallery uses artefacts, photographs and displays to introduce the settlement’s history, craftsmanship and community lifestyle. It offers context for what visitors see beyond the gallery. The nearby Malay Technology Museum adds a separate interpretation of traditional livelihoods and cottage industries through reconstructed houses and tools.
Visiting with respect
Brunei Tourism also describes hosted experiences at Kunyit 7 Lodge and Teratak Setiawan, connecting river homes with storytelling and food knowledge. These are specific hosts’ offerings, not activities guaranteed throughout the village. A heritage visit works best when residents’ privacy is respected and any invitation, demonstration or home visit is arranged with the host.
