Dian bian hu and Sibu’s food memory

Dian bian hu has a place in Sibu’s food identity and in its street art. A local stall and its operator are commemorated in a mural on Jalan Tukang Besi.

An everyday subject on a city wall

Sarawak Tourism Board describes the Dian Bian Hu mural as part of Sibu’s wider collection of scenes from local working life. The subject links a food stop with the people who make a city recognisable; it is more than a decorative backdrop.

From mural to meal

Use the name as a starting point when asking local cooks what is available. A mural records a culinary memory but does not guarantee that a particular stall still trades or offers the same menu. Confirm the actual food, ingredients and serving before ordering.

Keep the two experiences distinct

Enjoy the artwork as artwork and a meal as food. Do not use a photograph of the mural as though it were a photograph of the dish. A short detour through the heritage streets can fit alongside the central market without a separate long excursion.
