Piasau Nature Reserve

Discover Piasau’s short forest walks, urban restoration and hornbill conservation in Miri. Check current trail and visitor-centre access with Sarawak Forestry.

Nature within the city

Piasau Nature Reserve offers a different way to experience Miri: a protected green space within the urban landscape, with short forest walks and a strong association with hornbill conservation. It occupies land formerly used for housing connected to the oil industry, so its story is one of changing land use and restoration rather than untouched wilderness. This makes Piasau a useful choice when you have time for a focused nature visit without committing to a distant park excursion. Come to observe the relationship between the city, its trees and wildlife, with an unhurried walk as the core experience.

A landscape being restored

Restoration is an ongoing part of the reserve’s identity. In February 2026, Sarawak Energy and Sarawak Forestry Corporation planted 300 native tree seedlings here as part of a habitat-restoration programme. The participating group also visited the visitor centre to learn about conservation work. That recent account helps show that Piasau is a managed, working conservation landscape. It does not mean that visitors can join planting whenever they arrive. Newly planted trees need time and care, and designated restoration areas should be left undisturbed. Look at the reserve as a place where habitat is being supported over years, not a finished display assembled for tourists.

Hornbills without an appointment

The Oriental pied hornbill is closely associated with Piasau in official visitor information. The birds help explain why a small urban reserve can matter, but their presence is not a performance or a guaranteed encounter. Watch from paths and allow birds to move freely; do not follow them into restricted vegetation, feed them or approach a nest. Binoculars can help you observe from a distance without turning a quiet walk into a pursuit. Research institutions also describe hornbill monitoring at Piasau. Monitoring work and nesting areas are not visitor attractions, and this guide provides no precise wildlife locations.

Choose a short walk and check the centre

Sarawak Tourism describes short nature trails rather than a demanding mountain route. Allow around one to two hours as an editorial planning estimate, with extra time only if an interpretation visit or guided programme has been agreed. The visitor centre and the outdoor paths need not share the same access arrangements. Ask Sarawak Forestry’s Miri office which public entrance to use, which paths are available and whether the centre will be open during your visit. Follow any registration or ranger instructions on arrival. No fixed trail distance, universal guide requirement or free-admission promise is assumed here. If you need step-free access, ask about the actual surfaces and facilities before travelling.

Fit Piasau into a Miri stay

Reach the reserve by road from your Miri base and arrange the return pickup before starting your walk. Bring drinking water, rain protection and shoes suitable for wet paths; proximity to the city does not remove outdoor conditions. Choose a manageable outing and leave room for weather changes instead of packing it between inflexible commitments. A visit works best when you are interested in urban nature and restoration in their own right, not only in obtaining a hornbill photograph. For current advice use Sarawak Forestry’s official contact channels: older reserve web pages and named staff details may not be maintained. Keep the visit flexible enough to follow the manager’s instructions and the birds’ own rhythms.
