Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

Five islands and their surrounding reefs form Tunku Abdul Rahman Park just offshore from Kota Kinabalu. It is a practical marine-park excursion from a city base, provided boat arrangements, shore time and sea conditions shape the plan.

A protected seascape beside the city

Sabah Parks manages Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug together with their surrounding waters. Gazetted in 1974 and subsequently expanded, the park protects marine ecosystems as well as island plants and animals. Coral reefs are part of its purpose, not simply scenery for a beach day. Looking back towards Kota Kinabalu makes the relationship between city and islands tangible: a short sea crossing leads into a managed conservation area, rather than an unrestricted stretch of coast. The five islands differ in size, facilities and the experience offered, so it is worth choosing before buying a multi-island ticket.

Choose shore time over a long checklist

Manukan is one of the park's developed visitor islands, with beach access, facilities and nature trails described by the manager. Gaya has a larger forested interior and a mangrove trail, while Sapi and Mamutik offer other combinations of shore and water activities. Those descriptions should help start a conversation with your boat operator, not replace information about what is open that day. Choosing one or two islands can leave more time to settle in, walk an available path or observe the shoreline. This is a planning suggestion, not a rule: assess the route against your interests, mobility and confirmed return departure.

Confirm the current mainland departure point

Jesselton Point's own current information places its island services at South Jetty, Kota Kinabalu Port, near JQ Central parking. This matters when older maps or accommodation directions point to a previous departure area. Confirm the exact terminal and counter with the operator. The terminal offers advance and walk-in ticket arrangements, but same-day availability depends on capacity. Its published crossing estimate is about half an hour, with shorter transfers between islands. Daily departure and return times still need checking: the park's opening hours do not guarantee a boat will wait for you at the end of the afternoon.

Know what your island booking includes

A boat fare, park conservation charge, activity booking and equipment rental are different items. Ask what has been included, which island stops are agreed and how the return collection works. Confirm the operator's arrangements if weather changes the trip. Bring what you need for sun, rain and a wet landing without assuming every island provides the same shops or services. Boat boarding may require assistance even when the mainland terminal is accessible; discuss mobility needs beforehand. Kota Kinabalu is the straightforward base for an excursion and for the night before or after, without needing to move all your luggage offshore.

Follow conditions above and below the water

Swimming or snorkelling suitability changes with weather, sea state and the exact location. Take local advice and a suitable supervised option for your ability rather than interpreting shallow water as a safety guarantee. Avoid touching coral, chasing marine animals or standing on living reef. On land, use the paths open to visitors and respect the distinction between park areas and other island land. Gaya's mangrove forest provides a different ecological perspective from a sandy beach, but access still depends on your actual itinerary. Leave room for the organiser to alter or cancel a sea trip: an island day is most rewarding when its pace follows the place, not a fixed number of stops.
