Mangrove forest

A coastal forest habitat documented in Tanjung Puting, rather than an assumed feature of every inland destination.

Characteristics

UNESCO includes mangroves in Tanjung Puting’s ecosystem list. Geographic scope matters: the Palangka Raya city record does not receive a mangrove link merely because mangroves occur elsewhere in the province.

Distribution

Documented coastal examples include Tanjung Puting in Kalimantan, Bako in Sarawak and Brunei Bay. Mangroves belong to tidal coastal settings; an inland city such as Palangka Raya is not a mangrove destination simply because the habitat occurs elsewhere in its province.

Ecological importance

Mangroves bridge coastal and river environments. Tanjung Puting’s documented vegetation includes Rhizophora communities and nipa along riverbanks, adding distinct plant structure to the coastal forest mosaic.

Threats

UNESCO identifies illegal logging, fire, cultivation, mining and poaching among pressures on Tanjung Puting’s landscape. These pressures affect connected habitats; the listing is not a current condition survey of every forest patch.

Species found here

Examples in the linked species profiles include Saltwater crocodile, Tall-stilt mangrove, Nipah palm. Their profiles identify the particular locality and evidence. A habitat association does not mean the species occurs in every patch of that habitat.

Protected areas

Documented landscapes to explore include Tanjung Puting National Park, Kutai National Park, Tarakan Mangrove and Proboscis Monkey Conservation Area, Bako National Park. These areas contain habitat mosaics; the habitat does not cover their entire surface. Check each area’s access information before a visit.
