Bontang Mangrove Park

Bontang Mangrove Park offers a managed boardwalk through the coastal mangroves of Kutai National Park. Its setting within Bontang makes it a practical introduction to tidal forest, mangrove vegetation and waterbirds. Use the national park’s information: other mangrove attractions in the city have different entrances and management.

The coastal side of Kutai

This is a specific visitor site within Kutai National Park, in Bontang Baru, Bontang Utara. It is different from Mangrove Edu Park in Berbas Pantai. Give your driver the full name and check the destination with Balai TN Kutai to avoid confusion.

The attraction is the mangrove forest itself: roots, changing water levels and the transition towards the Makassar Strait. Interpretation along the boardwalk introduces vegetation and the role of the coastal habitat. This is a different experience from an inland forest trek, not a substitute for an orangutan excursion.

Walk, pause and look closely

The operator lists a wooden boardwalk, observation tower, rest gazebos and birdwatching facilities. Walk slowly, examining the vegetation and the exposed ground or water beneath it. Tides change what is visible. Birds and other wildlife may appear, but neither a particular species nor a sighting is guaranteed.

Stay on the sections authorised by staff, do not feed animals and take food scraps away. Ask whether the tower and full boardwalk are open. Published dimensions differ, so current information about usable sections matters more than an exact route length. Visitors with mobility requirements should ask about surfaces, steps and the suitable entrance.

Plan a manageable city outing

The authority currently posts 08:00–17:00 WITA and provides booking and information links. Reconfirm opening, admission and maintenance restrictions before travel. Office hours elsewhere on its website are not the attraction's schedule. Promotional sunrise or sunset photographs do not establish permission for out-of-hours entry.

Allow roughly one to two hours; this is an editorial estimate. Toilets, a prayer space, parking and food facilities are listed, though particular services may vary. Arrange return transport, bring drinking water and account for rain and slippery surfaces. No boat is needed for the core boardwalk visit.

This adds a coastal stop to a journey through East Kalimantan. Other parts of Kutai require separate access checks. Come with time to read, observe and rest rather than a checklist of wildlife targets.
