Overview
Kutai is a national park, not a general name for all forest in the Kutai region. Its official profile identifies the conservation area in East Kalimantan, while the park’s ecological publication describes lowland forest and additional swamp, mangrove and heath environments. These habitats support different species; one park relationship is not evidence for every trail.
Wildlife
The park publication explicitly names Bornean orangutan, proboscis monkey, sun bear, Sunda clouded leopard and saltwater crocodile. It also lists Ulin (Eusideroxylon zwageri) and Rhizophora apiculata among plants. Those exact identifications support the guide’s central species relationships; unlisted frogs or fish are not added merely because they occur elsewhere on Borneo.
Area & boundary sources
Official materials give differing area figures from different stages of boundary administration. This record leaves the numeric area unset rather than combining historical and current figures into false precision. Use the current conservation authority’s boundary documentation for legal or mapping decisions.
Access
Sangkima is documented as a forest-education setting with Ulin interpretation and walking infrastructure in a 2017 park report. That historical description does not confirm present trail condition or opening. Contact the park before arranging a visit, use authorised access and allow the guide to set the wildlife-observation distance.
Choosing a route
Prevab is approached by boat from Sangatta. The park lists guides, walking trails and camping facilities; confirm the meeting jetty and overnight arrangements directly. A short boat stage is only the approach, not the duration of the forest experience. Set aside a substantial part of a day for a guided visit, or discuss an overnight programme rather than assuming camping is available without booking. These are planning options, not a fixed park itinerary.
Sangkima has a different access context and a long-established association with ulin, or Bornean ironwood. Ask which walking infrastructure is currently usable. Do not combine both sectors under one ticket or transfer assumption. Lowland forest is a key habitat, but the park's mangroves and swamp areas have different conditions. A species recorded somewhere in Kutai is not thereby an expected sighting on the selected trail.
Reading the landscape
Observing wild orangutans differs from visiting a rehabilitation centre. Keep the guide's distance and accept that animals may avoid people. Park-level records also support sun bear and proboscis monkey, without guaranteeing either on a visit. Combine a confirmed park route with the wider East Kalimantan itinerary only after finalising the local transport and sleeping base.
