Choose the walk before setting out
Sangkima offers a practical way to spend time in East Kalimantan’s lowland forest from the Bontang–Sangatta road corridor. Its appeal lies in looking closely: the size of an ironwood trunk, differences between tree crowns and the changing sounds beyond the walkway. A quiet, unhurried visit gives these details room to become the main event.
The boardwalk approach to the large ulin is roughly a kilometre. Beyond that, a longer forest route brings a different level of effort. Ask staff to describe today’s open sections before deciding whether to continue. Distances quoted for the complete route vary, so agree a turnaround time instead of building a tight onward connection around a single figure.
Read the forest with a guide
Ulin is one of Sangkima’s characteristic trees, alongside the dipterocarp forest that gives this part of Borneo much of its tall canopy. Ask a guide to help distinguish trunks, leaves and forest layers rather than treating the large tree as the only stop worth making. Tree interpretation has long been part of the visitor programme here.
Birdwatching rewards pauses and quiet listening. Bring binoculars if you enjoy observing the canopy, but keep expectations open: wildlife moves freely, and a forest walk does not carry an orangutan sighting promise. Let animals choose their distance and leave branches, bark and fallen material where they are.
Match the route to the group
The extended walk can involve uneven ground and bridge crossings. Walking infrastructure does not make every part suitable for every visitor. Mention balance difficulties, limited mobility or discomfort with heights before booking, and ask for a precise description of the proposed route. A shorter visit is worthwhile when it leaves enough time to notice the forest.
Wear shoes with grip and carry drinking water, rain protection and a small bag for your litter. After rain, slow down on timber and at changes of level. Follow staff instructions at bridges and raised structures; their condition and permitted use matter more than an old photograph.
Arrange the road journey
Confirm the entrance and return transport with your driver, accommodation or park contact. Bontang and Sangatta are useful places from which to discuss the final approach. If starting farther away, separate the time spent travelling from the time available on foot.
Check opening arrangements, current smoke or weather conditions and any route restrictions shortly before leaving. Ask whether guiding and entry are included in a quoted visit. Keep the rest of the day flexible enough for a slower walk or a change of plan.
