Appearance & recognition
This large sword fern can produce fronds more than two metres long. Narrow leaflets line the central axis, while small round spore clusters appear on fertile leaf undersides. Scales occur on runners and lower leaf stalks. These details separate it from similar Nephrolepis species more reliably than size alone, because growing conditions can alter a fern’s overall dimensions.

Australian Tropical Herbarium · Nephrolepis biserrata: description and identificationRange & habitat
The species has a broad tropical distribution and grows on the ground in rainforest, forest margins and damp sites. It also occurs in cultivation and can spread readily by runners. Its fern identity does not establish a food relationship: it should not inherit the vegetable uses of vegetable fern or kalakai. Spore-bearing features are especially useful for correct identification.
