Tarakan to Nunukan by speedboat

Plan a domestic passenger-boat journey to Nunukan, then arrange your town stay or onward visit to Binusan from the correct arrival terminal.

A domestic island connection

Tarakan–Nunukan is a regional passenger-speedboat connection within North Kalimantan. Tarakan’s municipal information identifies the route from Tengkayu I, and port reporting identifies Liem Hie Djung on the Nunukan side. These are the names to discuss with the ticket agent and anyone meeting you, rather than simply asking for transport to the nearest harbour.

The crossing can support time in Nunukan and a separately arranged Binusan visit. It does not take you directly to Sebatik or across the international border to Malaysia. Keep those other journeys outside the plan until you have established their own departure points, services and any relevant entry requirements.

Choose the right kind of boat

Tarakan’s transport information includes regular speedboats, KMP Manta II ferry services and PELNI ships. They are different services with different operating arrangements. A timetable for one should not be used to plan another, even when some place names overlap. Tell the agent that you want the passenger speedboat to Nunukan and confirm the actual terminal shown on the ticket.

Ask for the selected day’s departure, reporting time, expected arrival and baggage conditions. Older municipal schedule pages are useful for recognising the corridor but should not determine your travel time. Keep the vessel name and booking contact, and check how you will be informed if the departure changes.

From the airport to your host

If arriving at Juwata Airport, arrange the road leg to Tengkayu I separately and allow time for baggage collection. Compare the flight with the boat’s check-in requirement before choosing a same-day connection. A night in Tarakan may be a better fit when the flight arrives late or you want a less pressured start.

On the Nunukan side, arrange a named pickup at the arrival terminal. Binusan’s community profile describes an approximately thirty-minute road journey from Nunukan town centre, not necessarily from the boat terminal. Agree the actual drive and meeting place with your host, and keep waterfall guiding or mangrove activities separate from the transport booking.

Baggage, boarding and the return

Ask how large bags are handled and keep documents, medicines and valuables in a small protected bag. Check the life jacket provided for you and follow crew instructions during boarding and the crossing. Explain any need for assistance with steps or movement between pier and vessel before purchasing the ticket.

Confirm the return sailing on its own date, especially if you must reach a flight from Tarakan afterwards. Give yourself space for delays and make sure your accommodation knows the expected arrival window. With the exact boat service, terminals and road pickup understood, the crossing can be a straightforward link in a Nunukan-area itinerary without confusing it with a ferry or international journey.
