A different side of the Berau gateway
Tanjung Redeb is often a staging point for island travel, but the river landscape around Batu-Batu and Pulau Besing offers a different reason to stay on the mainland. A provincial-government account describes an actual journey by the motorboat Batikas, following the river and circling the village of Pulau Besing. Mangrove forest, wild proboscis monkeys and flying foxes were part of that visit.
The report establishes a real boat experience rather than merely naming a viewpoint. It does not establish a daily departure or guarantee that the same boat and skipper can be booked for your dates. Make the arrangements locally before committing a day.
Watching from the water
The attraction is seeing the riverbank as habitat. Ask your guide to explain what is visible from the boat and how the river, mangroves and village fit together. A slower, patient approach gives you time to look without making wildlife sightings the only measure of a successful outing.
Keep your distance from animals and avoid asking the boatman to crowd trees, disturb roosts or attract wildlife with food. Use binoculars or a longer camera lens if you have them. An animal seen during a documented visit is evidence of that observation, not a promise for your own trip.
Agreeing the route and duration
The official account describes a journey lasting more than three hours. That is a useful indication that this can be a substantial river outing, but it is not a fixed tour duration. Ask the organiser which sections are included, where you board, whether there are any shore stops and when you should expect to return.
Confirm whether transport from your accommodation is included. Do not assume that a departure for the offshore islands uses the same pier or boat. This river journey needs its own meeting point and a clear agreement about the end of the trip.
Before you step aboard
Check that the boat has suitable lifejackets for everyone and ask how weather or river conditions affect departure. Discuss boarding steps, shade and seating if anyone in your group has particular needs. The government visit does not provide an accessibility assessment or a specification for future passenger boats.
Bring drinking water and protect belongings from spray and rain. Ask permission before photographing residents at close range, and follow the guide’s advice around village areas. A wildlife-focused outing still passes through places where people live and work.
Fitting it into your journey
Consider this experience as a distinct mainland activity before or after an island stay, with a confirmed return time that leaves a comfortable margin before onward travel. Avoid treating it as an automatic add-on between an arriving flight and a boat connection.
Request a current local quote, route description and cancellation arrangement. Make sure the organiser confirms Batu-Batu and Pulau Besing explicitly, rather than assuming that any Berau boat trip follows this route.
