Plan your visit

Planning duration
Multiple days

Duration is a planning guide, not an official minimum. Check the article for terrain, access and transfer details.

The experience

Selingan offers a particular kind of wildlife visit: the evening follows the needs of nesting turtles and the conservation team, not a performance timetable. Sabah Parks protects a group of islands, but visitor turtle observation is associated with Selingan. Do not interpret a general description of the park as permission to land on other nesting islands.

Time and effort

Arrange an overnight stay if the turtle programme is your purpose. The park authority explicitly places turtle observation at night, while daytime island or snorkelling trips are different products. Nesting times cannot be scheduled for visitors. Leave the evening flexible and ask how the morning return fits with your next journey; a late or rough crossing can affect connections.

Arrange your visit

Sandakan is the mainland gateway. Confirm the exact departure jetty, sea transfer, island accommodation, meals, park permission and ranger programme with the operator. Check whether an advertised package genuinely includes Selingan rather than another island with a similar turtle theme. Accommodation is part of the protected-island visit, not a reason to create a separate town destination.

Wildlife and visitor conduct

Rangers decide when and how a group may approach. Follow their instructions about lighting, photographs, distance and movement. Never touch a nesting turtle, handle eggs or hatchlings, or enter a nesting beach independently to improve your view. Conservation work belongs to trained staff. The green turtle is part of this protected system, but neither a landing nor a particular conservation stage should be guaranteed.

Conditions and preparation

The boat journey is weather dependent. Bring clothing for humid island conditions, sun and rain protection, necessary personal items and compact luggage appropriate to the operator’s boat rules. Confirm facilities and any medical or mobility concerns before paying. Calm-looking water at departure does not promise identical conditions on the return trip. Follow boat instructions and keep sensitive belongings protected.

Stay and combine

Stay in Sandakan before departure if that gives more reliable timing than a same-day flight. Sepilok and inland wildlife journeys can complement the island, but plan them as separate logistics rather than squeezing them into a guaranteed return slot. The value of this experience is patient observation under park control; it remains a conservation visit rather than an opportunity for staged wildlife interaction.
