Sandakan Airport: onward travel planning

Use Sandakan Airport as an arrival point for Sandakan, Sepilok and pre-arranged wildlife journeys; coordinate onward road and boat transfers before flying.

Choose your base

Sandakan is one of Sabah’s domestic air gateways. Staying in Sandakan gives a town base, while a Sepilok stay places you closer to the conservation centres and forest visits. They are different pickup locations: give your accommodation name to the transfer provider rather than assuming that every Sandakan pickup includes Sepilok.

Connect flights and transfers

For a Kinabatangan lodge, arrange the lodge’s actual road transfer and meeting point before choosing a flight. Island stays require another step: Sabah Tourism describes Lankayan access through a Sandakan jetty and an arranged resort boat. An airport arrival is therefore not a confirmed island connection. Obtain the current boat departure, check-in cutoff and delayed-flight procedure directly from the host; an overnight stop may be needed.

A visit after arrival

A combined Sepilok visit is a separate activity, not an airport service. Leave time for baggage, travel and the centres’ current admissions. Keep your last day flexible rather than treating an animal observation session as a guaranteed connection between flights.
