Plan your visit

The experience

The Rainforest Discovery Centre combines an elevated skywalk, ground trails, an exhibition area and a Plant Discovery Garden. The experience is about reading a rainforest rather than moving quickly between animal displays. Tree crowns offer one perspective; roots, leaf litter and planted interpretation areas offer others. The centre is managed by the Sabah Forestry Department and has an educational purpose.

Time and effort

There is no single required circuit or official minimum visit length. As editorial planning advice, leave an unhurried part of the day rather than a short stop between transfers. Birdwatchers may prefer longer observation periods at fewer locations. Ask which sections are accessible and how much climbing is involved before committing to an elevated route; not every visitor needs to follow the same circuit.

Arrange your visit

Use Sandakan or accommodation around Sepilok as a base and arrange the road journey to the correct centre entrance. The orangutan and sun bear centres are separate sites, with separate admissions. RDC publishes daytime opening hours and visitor information directly. Check current entry arrangements, any trail restrictions and the return journey before leaving your accommodation, especially if travelling without a tour.

Wildlife and visitor conduct

The Bornean bristlehead is among the reasons specialist birders are interested in Sepilok, but a visit cannot promise a particular bird. Listen quietly and allow others space to observe. Do not feed animals, leave marked routes to approach them or use calls simply to force a photograph. Read plant labels carefully: a garden specimen should not automatically be described as a wild endemic.

Conditions and preparation

Humidity and rain affect comfort even on a constructed walkway. Bring secure footwear, water, rain protection and binoculars if birds are your main interest. Follow staff decisions on access and do not assume an advertised walkway is open in every weather condition. Keep bags manageable on steps and platforms. A slow visit still involves standing and walking; ask staff about an appropriate route if mobility is limited.

Stay and combine

Combine a daytime forest visit with other Sepilok conservation sites only after allowing for their own schedules and tickets. The centre’s guided night walk is a separate programme, not an extension of independent daytime admission. A nearby stay can make it easier to separate daytime observation and an evening activity without rushing. Confirm transport after dark before booking the latter.
