A forest visit with an educational purpose
The Rainforest Discovery Centre, usually shortened to RDC, is in the Sepilok area near Sandakan. Its focus is understanding the rainforest: walking through it, looking into the canopy and learning about plants and forest relationships. The centre is associated with the Sabah Forestry Department and combines a visitor attraction with environmental education.
It is distinct from both the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Those are separate visitor destinations with their own admission and arrangements. Booking or entering one should not be assumed to include the other two.
Skywalk, trails and plants
The elevated Rainforest Skywalk offers a different view from the ground-level forest trails. Use both perspectives if time and conditions allow: tree crowns are easier to study from above, while trails bring attention back to roots, leaf litter and the forest’s layered structure. Check which sections are accessible on arrival and follow any closures or staff instructions.
The Plant Discovery Garden and exhibition spaces provide another way into the subject, especially when you want a more focused introduction before a longer walk. Do not assume every cultivated plant is wild or endemic to Borneo; use the labels and explanations. The broader lowland rainforest guide gives context for what you are seeing without turning the visit into a checklist of guaranteed species.
Birdwatching and guided night walks
RDC is a recognised birdwatching destination, but birds and other wildlife move freely. Bring binoculars if that is your interest and allow quiet observation time rather than expecting an animal at each platform. Do not feed wildlife, leave marked routes or pressure other visitors to move for a photograph.
The centre advertises guided night walks separately from daytime visiting. Enquire directly about availability, meeting time, booking and what to bring. A daytime ticket and the normal closing time should not be interpreted as permission to remain on the trails independently after dark. No particular bird, flying mammal or other animal is guaranteed on either kind of visit.
Getting there and allowing enough time
Arrange transport from Sandakan or your Sepilok accommodation, naming Rainforest Discovery Centre specifically. Confirm a return pickup, particularly if you plan a night walk. The map point identifies the visitor-centre area; it is not a trail route or a promise that a particular gate is suitable for every visitor.
Allow several hours for a first daytime visit, and more if birdwatching is your main purpose. Trying to fit all three Sepilok centres into a hurried stop leaves little time for observation. If combining them, check each centre’s current admission and schedule separately. The existing Sepilok accommodation page is one nearby stay reference, not a requirement to book there.
Current practical information
At the October 2026 check, RDC’s official website states daily daytime opening from 08:00 to 17:00, including public holidays, and cash-only admission. Recheck these details with the centre before travelling, especially for evening programmes or any weather-related restrictions. Ticket prices are deliberately left to the current official information.
Bring water, rain protection and footwear appropriate to forest paths. Ask staff about the most suitable route if you have mobility requirements; an elevated walkway does not establish that the whole site is step-free. The photograph on this page shows the garden pond at RDC, not the skywalk or the animal centres nearby.
Combining forest and river visits
The Kinabatangan wildlife-watching activity makes a useful next stage for travellers with more time, but it takes place along a different river landscape with separate transfers, guides and accommodation. It is not an activity inside RDC and cannot be added to a daytime ticket. Keep a Sandakan or Sepilok overnight stop between tight travel connections if needed. The combination works because forest walking here and river observation there reveal different environments, not because one site includes the other.
