Two markets, different stalls
Pasar Utama and Pasar Tamu stand near one another by the older riverfront. Their stalls include fruit, vegetables, fish and everyday provisions. The buildings’ pointed roofs refer to the terendak, a traditional Melanau hat. Take time to look beyond the architecture: the variety of goods is part of the attraction.
Coastal flavours
Look for belacan and cincaluk, two shrimp-based condiments associated with Bintulu. Ask sellers how their products are used and stored rather than assuming they are ready-to-eat snacks. A meal nearby makes a useful pause before continuing towards the town’s public waterfront or Council Negeri monument.
Visit with consideration
Keep working aisles clear and ask before photographing sellers. Carry some small cash, but confirm prices and payment methods at the stall. Open stalls and food choices vary, so avoid treating an old guide’s opening hours or restaurant list as a promise for your visit.
