Malay heritage at Matan
The palace setting in Mulia Kerta gives Ketapang’s history a tangible centre. Look closely at the architecture and ask about current access before planning an interior visit.

On the Pawan River, Ketapang offers a quieter city visit built around Malay heritage, working riverbanks and local food. Spend two days between Mulia Kerta’s palace setting, Kauman and the town’s public spaces, with time to watch everyday life unfold.

A landmark named for ale-ale clams, a lively town park and Kauman’s amplang producers make a visit feel rooted in daily life. Leave space for food and conversation between the sights.

Alongside Malay palace heritage, Tua Pek Kong reflects Ketapang’s Chinese community. Approach religious places respectfully and ask before entering.

The palace stands in Mulia Kerta, on the Benua Kayong side of town. Its setting belongs to a wider landscape of Malay royal heritage, with the Pawan nearby and historic burial places in the neighbourhood. Approach it as a living cultural site, not a guaranteed all-day museum. The building’s access can change; a thoughtful visit starts with asking what is open and where photography is welcome.

Small boats along the Pawan are part of everyday movement, not a ready-made visitor attraction. An unhurried walk on the public riverbank can be rewarding without booking an excursion. Combine Kauman’s waterfront with a food stop, keeping private landings and working areas clear. If you want to travel on the water, arrange a suitable operator and confirm the route and safety equipment separately.

Rahadi Oesman Airport (KTG) is in Kali Nilam, Delta Pawan. Arrange a road transfer to your accommodation and confirm the current flight schedule with your airline.
Explore furtherGroup Kauman and Mulia Kerta together, with arranged road transport between neighbourhoods. Take short walks at the riverfront and park rather than assuming the whole town is comfortable to explore on foot.
Keep outdoor walks for the cooler hours and allow room for showers. A flexible plan works better than a tight list of stops; confirm access to the palace before travelling there.
Two days give a useful introduction, with an optional third day for a slower pace. Carry drinking water, ask before photographing people or cultural spaces, and explain dietary needs when ordering.
Ketapang’s river neighbourhoods lie on both sides of the Pawan. This guide focuses on Delta Pawan and the adjoining urban neighbourhoods of Benua Kayong. Rahadi Oesman Airport serves the town. 100,811 registered residents (first half of 2025), calculated for the whole Delta Pawan district plus the adjoining kelurahan of Kauman and Banjar. This is a defined administrative core, not an autonomous municipality or an exact built-up urban area. The rest of Benua Kayong is excluded. Delta Pawan also includes rural land.

Start with Tugu Ale-Ale and Taman Kota Tanjung Pura, then settle into a gentle riverfront walk in Kauman. Leave time for an early meal and the boats on the Pawan.

Visit the palace setting in Mulia Kerta, following the access arrangements on the day. Return through Kauman for amplang and look for ketupat colet. Keep the afternoon flexible instead of adding a distant national park.

Return to a favourite neighbourhood or the town park, then leave plenty of time for your onward journey. A spare day is useful for weather or changed access, not an obligation to fill every hour.

Mulia Kerta is the clearest starting point for Ketapang’s Malay royal heritage. The palace setting and nearby historic burial places belong to the Benua Kayong neighbourhood, close to the Pawan. Keep the different sites distinct and ask locally which are open to visitors. Buildings used for community or cultural purposes may not follow museum opening hours. Dress respectfully, ask before entering restricted areas and avoid treating ceremonies as staged performances. The public riverbank adds useful geographical context: this is a town whose cultural landmarks remain closely connected to the water.

Use the Pawan as a thread through the visit rather than a reason to travel far into the regency. Kauman combines a public riverfront with food traditions; Mulia Kerta adds the palace setting. Taman Kota Tanjung Pura, on Jalan Urip Sumaharjo in Kelurahan Kantor, is a separate urban stop for walking and everyday recreation. Move between these areas by road and take shorter walks once there. Stay clear of working landings. A distant beach or forest journey needs its own transport and time; it should not replace a local city activity on a compact itinerary.

Start with dishes whose connection to Ketapang is well documented. Ketupat colet belongs to local Malay cooking, ale-ale appears in clam preparations, and Kauman is known for amplang producers. These are introductions, not a fixed tasting menu available everywhere. Ask vendors what they make that day, how a dish is served and whether fish or shellfish is included. Buying from a small producer is a simple way to encounter the neighbourhood, but it does not guarantee access to a workshop. Leave time to sit down and eat rather than collecting food stops solely for photographs.

Two days allow a first look at the town, with a third day useful for a slower pace or weather changes. Rahadi Oesman Airport is in Kali Nilam, Delta Pawan, so keep the airport’s exact name and KTG code when arranging transport. Group visits geographically: Kauman and Mulia Kerta work together, while the park and town-centre stops can fill another part of the day. Check cultural-site access before leaving your accommodation. Carry water and rain protection, avoid overloaded schedules and arrange onward travel separately from sightseeing. No boat departure or opening hour should be assumed without a current check.

This is a defined administrative core, not an autonomous municipality or an exact built-up urban area. The rest of Benua Kayong is excluded. Delta Pawan also includes rural land. Population uses Dukcapil registration figures from one reference period: Delta Pawan 93,377 + Kauman 6,131 + Banjar 1,303. BPS classifies Kauman and Banjar as urban; the Ketapang spatial plan places them in the adjoining riverfront core. This is not the BPS Delta Pawan figure of 93,663, and the two series have not been combined.
