Ketupat nipah in Sangatta

Read a documented Sangatta food encounter through nipah-leaf ketupat, a shared regional tradition rather than an exclusively local invention.

The local context

Photographer Wibowo Djatmiko documented nipah-leaf ketupat at a coto Makassar stall in Sangatta in March 2011, with a stated location and date. A 2022 university study of ketupat producers in Samarinda also names Sangatta among the markets reached by their products. Together these sources support a local connection to a wider food tradition. They do not establish that the photographed stall still operates or that Sangatta invented the dish. The woven parcel is a useful starting point for asking about ingredients and serving customs.

Planning a visit

Look for current availability rather than travelling to an unnamed historic stall. Ask what accompanies the ketupat and what is in the broth or sauce; a rice parcel alone does not reveal the ingredients of the whole meal. Confirm freshness and portion size before ordering. The photograph records a real past meal, not a present-day restaurant endorsement or a promise that every stall serves the same version.
