Nasi kuning in Sabah

Nasi kuning is a familiar rice meal on Sabah’s east coast, including Tawau and Sandakan. The yellow rice is the starting point; accompaniments make each serving different.

A regional meal

Sabah Tourism’s food trail presents nasi kuning among the region’s everyday dishes. Turmeric gives the rice its characteristic colour; fish, chicken, egg or other accompaniments vary with the stall. The dish belongs to a wider regional food tradition, so it should not be described as an invention unique to one Sabah city.

Choose the accompaniments

Look at the available combinations before ordering and ask about chilli, fish and other ingredients that matter to you. Sambal can change the heat considerably. A small portion is a useful introduction, particularly if you plan to try other market foods during the same morning.

A practical breakfast stop

Use the actual stall’s current menu and opening pattern rather than a fixed travel-guide schedule. Eat freshly served food and keep the visit flexible: market availability changes. Ask before photographing a vendor and avoid blocking the queue while choosing.
