Appearance & recognition
Alan is a Bornean dipterocarp now accepted as Rubroshorea albida. Older forestry literature calls it Shorea albida. Both names refer to the same species; the revised genus should not create a duplicate plant record. In northern Borneo, alan is especially associated with peat-swamp forest, where canopy trees form distinctive forest communities over deep organic soils.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam uses this species in its Badas tree-planting work, combining native-tree establishment with peatland research. Restoration follows more than the number of planted seedlings: surviving trees, water conditions and the surrounding forest matter too. Swamp kapur and terentang help place alan within a wider wetland flora rather than as an isolated ornamental tree.
