Appearance & recognition

Hollow young twigs give this fig its distinctive character. A tree may reach about 18 metres, with white latex and rough-surfaced figs clustered on trunks, branches or leaf axils. Mature figs turn pale green-yellow. Leaves are variable in size and outline, making the combination of twig, fig and growth form more useful than one leaf alone.

Life in the ecosystem

The tree grows in forests, disturbed margins and streamside settings from lowlands into lower mountains. Ceratosolen constrictus and Ceratosolen hewitti are recorded fig-wasp associates. Fruit clusters attract arboreal mammals, including fruit bats. Those fruit eaters must not be confused with the insect-eating Hardwicke’s woolly bat, whose special plant relationship concerns pitcher shelters.
