Appearance & recognition

Keruing sol is a large tree with buttresses, chocolate-brown bark and strongly pleated leaves. Its fruit has two long and three short calyx wings, typical of its genus but not enough by themselves to identify the species. PROSEA records the Sabah name kalup puteh and the West Kalimantan name sindur betul. These names help place botanical description in regional forest knowledge.

Range & habitat

It occurs in lowland dipterocarp forest on well-drained, often sandy soils, including ultrabasic substrates in Sabah. Its native range also includes Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Keruing timber and wood oil are documented uses. The drained mineral-soil habitat contrasts with the waterlogged peat setting of alan, showing why Borneo’s large forest trees should not all receive the same habitat description.
