Rocks with a cultural history
Large boulders distinguish this site from the surrounding lowland landscape. Central Kalimantan's tourism authority identifies it as a place associated with Tjilik Riwut's meditation and as a cultural and natural attraction in Katingan. That combination explains why people arrive for different reasons: some come to look around, while others have personal religious purposes.
The same name is used for other places in Borneo. When arranging transport, specify the Bukit Batu cultural site near Kasongan in Katingan, on the road west from Palangka Raya. Do not confuse it with the Bukit Batu administrative area around Tangkiling or a South Kalimantan attraction.
A place still used today
Katingan's government recorded a cultural gathering and commemoration of the Tumbang Anoi peace history here in May 2026. This confirms contemporary cultural use but does not create a daily performance schedule. A visitor on an ordinary day should not expect dances, rituals or a staged reception.
Treat worshippers and ceremonial objects with care. Ask before photographing a ritual or a person, keep your voice low when worship is taking place, and follow local guidance on where to walk. Do not move offerings or climb a sacred feature simply because it looks like a convenient viewpoint.
Planning the stop
Kasongan is the nearest planning point, while Palangka Raya can serve as the wider overnight base. The provincial tourism source describes a road approach along the regional corridor toward Katingan. Confirm the current entrance, opening and admission locally before travelling; old travel times and ticket prices are not reliable commitments.
Allow one or two hours on site as an editorial estimate, with road travel added separately. Wear footwear suited to uneven rock and reconsider exposed or slippery sections after rain. Ask about the exact accessible route if steps or unstable footing are a concern. A respectful shorter visit is preferable to forcing a climb.
Combining landscape and regional history
Bukit Batu fits a journey through Central Kalimantan that gives space to local history as well as forests and rivers. Combine the stop with time in Kasongan or a return to Palangka Raya. Leave flexibility for the atmosphere on arrival: a quiet public visit and a day of religious observance may call for different behaviour.
