Overview
A betang combines family living spaces with shared areas for community life. Its architecture is therefore about social relationships as well as the building itself. Ngaju examples belong within a wider range of Dayak longhouse traditions, whose names and forms vary between communities and places.
Traditions
The house also supports shared discussion, customary activities and social relationships. Actual construction and size vary by locality, community and building period, so measurements from one traditional form are not universal specifications.
Locations
Tumbang Gagu in East Kotawaringin is a documented historic example. Modern settlement patterns have changed, and longhouses should not be portrayed as the home of every present-day Ngaju family.
