Kubah National Park

Explore Kubah’s palms, forest trails and amphibian habitats near Kuching. Plan a daytime visit and check individual trails and any night programme with the park.

A forest park within reach of Kuching

Kubah National Park protects a forested part of the Matang Range outside Kuching. Sandstone hills, streams and dense vegetation make it a different outing from the city’s museums or riverfront. The park covers 2,230 hectares and includes the landscapes around Gunung Serapi, Gunung Selang and Gunung Sendok. Its attraction is the forest itself: layered foliage, palms, changing ground conditions and the possibility of noticing small animals without needing a major wildlife sighting to make the visit worthwhile. Kuching remains a practical base for arranging transport, supplies and a return journey.

Look closely at the vegetation

Palms are a defining feature of Kubah, alongside ferns, orchids and the taller trees of dipterocarp forest. The park manager also identifies patches of kerangas forest, adding another habitat to the protected landscape. Slow walking gives more time to notice how leaves, stems and the forest floor differ between places. Stay on approved paths: an interesting plant is not an invitation to step into undergrowth, remove a leaf or search for a rare specimen. A forest walk can be rewarding through its textures and sounds even when birds and mammals remain hidden.

Choose a walk that is open that day

Official visitor information describes forest walks including the Waterfall and Belian trails. Treat these as options to discuss at headquarters, rather than a promise that every section is available. Ask which route suits your time, fitness and current conditions before setting out, and agree when you need to return. Wet roots, steps and slippery surfaces can change the effort involved. Wear shoes with grip and bring drinking water and rain protection. As an editorial planning estimate, allow half a day to a full day for a selected daytime visit, including the transfer; this is not a measured completion time for a particular trail.

Amphibian interest without a sighting promise

Kubah is associated with a rich amphibian fauna, including the Matang narrow-mouthed frog. Such ecological associations help explain the forest’s value; they are not directions to a breeding site or a guarantee of finding an animal. Night frog programmes are advertised by tourism sources and operators, but reports about access to the frog pond are not consistent, including a maintenance warning concerning its walkways. This guide therefore does not promise entry to the pond or an evening itinerary. Ask the park and your chosen operator what is currently permitted, where the group will go and whether after-dark access is included. Never handle or move frogs for photographs.

Arrange the return and distinguish nearby facilities

Arrange a return road transfer from Kuching rather than assuming transport will be waiting when you finish. Sarawak Forestry provides a booking office for questions about park access and overnight accommodation. Its park information lists basic cooking facilities but no cafeteria or catering service, so confirm what to bring if a stay is accepted. Matang Wildlife Centre is a separate visitor operation associated with the wider Kubah area; its rehabilitation animals must not be presented as wild sightings on the park’s walking trails. Choose the forest visit, a confirmed specialist programme or a separately planned centre visit according to your interests, without assuming one ticket or route covers everything.
